Edit: Thats got to be who the movie was about or a fictional version. Thanks Heisuke not sure why I never put that together!
Thanks I know that one..this pre-dated that era but my young age and fuzzy memory couldnt really say if it was 1930s 40s 50s or 60s... the nudity I saw made me thinks it was pre40s or post 50s Quote:

Deluge. A special effects heavy disaster film from 1933 (the destruction of NYC is quite spectacular)...oh yeah, the beautiful Peggy Shannon spends a good portion of the film in her underwear. Sadly, she died of a heart attack at the age of 34.

Slave Auction - Roman Scandals (1933)

My own videos (there are two of them in separate posts) are from the Eddie Cantor film Roman Scandals from 1933. It's a great film from a star rarely shown on TV nowadays, and sees Cantor somehow end up back in Roman days. It also has nudity and see through costumes, and in this video it has the slave auction scene, where slave girls (played by Goldwyn Girls, including Paulette Goddard, Lucille Ball and Barbara Pepper) are naked and chained up, with only their wigs to spare them their modesty. It also has one slave girl stripped by her captors as they eye her up to be auctioned off. She's not happy about her purchaser, I can tell you! I've uploaded this separate to the other video, as that contains clips of the 'established' actresses who wear more than revealing costumes. Besides, trying to limit screenshots for this to nine is hard enough already, and I thought you'd like to see the pictures as well as the video. Have fun trying to spot Paulette and Lucille among the slave girls! |

Verree Teasdale, Gloria Stuart - Roman Scandals (1933)
9 Attachment(s)
This 2nd video from Roman Scandals concerns a couple of the mainstream actresses who appear in this film. They are Verree Teasdale and the more famous Gloria Stuart (The Old Dark House, Titanic, etc). First up is Verree Teasdale, whose entire costume consists of one shear fabric dress. She plays the villainous Agrippina, and throughout the film she is practically topless! If fans of her back then ever wanted to know what she looked like naked, they'd only need to watch this movie! I've included two of her main scenes that best show off her 'talents', as including all her scenes would take too much time - though what enjoyable time it would be!
The 2nd is Gloria Stuart, who plays the heroine here, and who Eddie Cantor finds in the bathhouse spa (under disguise in a mud pack, posing as a slave). In that scene her top is see through, leaving a little more on show than I imagine she thought she would! And on the end of the video is a clip of a spa girl when Cantor enters the spa, as you can clearly see her breasts underneath the sheer fabric she is wrapping herself in. I haven't included the "Keep Young and Beautiful" scene from this, by the way, as having checked through it you don't actually get to see any flesh. Instead, just content yourself with watching established actresses as you would never of imagined seeing them back in those days. Enjoy. |

Frances Drake - Forsaking All Others (1934)
7 Attachment(s)
This brief little clip comes from the film Forsaking All Others from 1934, starring Clark Gable, Joan Crawford and Frances Drake - who is best remembered as the object of Peter Lorre's desires in the film Mad Love (1935). It is Drake who features in this party scene, where it becomes very clear that under that dress of hers Miss Drake is not wearing any underwear! Her bottom can be clearly seen through the dress, which is quite surprising in a film of this age. But it seems in Pre-Code Hollywood anything goes, and in Miss Drake's case it was her knickers! As for the rest of Frances' career, her other notable roles included Les Miserables (1935) and It's a Wonderful World (1939) before marriage to the 20th Earl of Suffolk saw her career end, as he disapproved of her acting. Boo! She died in 2000 in her 88th year.

Julie Bishop - Tarzan the Fearless (1933)

Anyway, as to the video, this is from B-Feature Tarzan the Fearless from 1933, which starred Buster Crabbe trying to rival Johnny Weissmuller for the right to wear THAT loincloth. Here he just happens to be watching in the trees (yeah, right) when Julie Bishop - then just Jacqueline Wells - decides to take a naked swim in the river. I've zoomed in the section when she trots off into the water, as you do get to see the back view of Julie, though I've got the feeling she may be wearing undies (spoilsport). However, she certainly looks topless when she is in the water, as she discovers there is a scaly beast lurking in the water after her (no, it isn't Tarzan, it's a crocodile). Tarzan naturally leaps in to try and save her, but will he succeed? To find out (as if you need wonder), you can see the whole film on that You tube thing. But honestly, poor Julie. What was worse for her - being grabbed by the crocs or getting Crabbes? |

Intolerance (1916)

As it is, my upload this time has not been reviewed on there, as it's from WAY back - to 1916, to be exact - to D W Griffiths' Intolerance. I came across this video clip on You tube of it's various nude moments, so for once it's not been compiled by me like this, but from another. I don't know if there is more nudity than shown here, but scenes include two topless women looking up adoringly at a woman topless under a sheer top, another woman dressed in just see thin fabric lying on her back, a naked fairy looking at a wood nymph splashing naked in a pool, an empress in a sheer dress looking at herself in a mirror, an orgy scene with topless and bottomless women, and another woman dancing naked in see through fabric. If I come across anything else from this period before I go in March I shall upload it for you all, but for now enjoy these clips from a period in history where you always thought the ladies back then kept very much buttoned up! |
Forbidden Daughters (1927)

"Forbidden Daughters" is a pre-code short movie from 1927, directed by nude photographer Albert Arthur Allen.
"Alva receives news from her long-lost husband, Russell, and goes to Africa in search of him. There, she finds that her husband is being "held prisoner" by a naked native princess, called Loma. Now, in order to bring Russell back home, Alva must show that she's better than the princess." Great nudity! |

Un Carnet de Bal (Life Dances On) (1937)
6 Attachment(s)
This clip comes from France from the film Un Carnet de Bal (or Life Dances On for it's English title). Even though the French have always been typically liberal when getting their actresses naked, it's still a surprise to see nudity in a film from 1937. This scene involves lead actress Marie Ball going to look up an old love in a nightclub, but discovering he runs a seedy place involving topless dancers who are paid to later 'entertain' the diners. The last pic is a still for the film's promotion, unbelievably!

Pre-Code Cartoons
This is a lengthy article about pre-Hays Code animation, with many clips illustrating the referenced cartoons.
Excerpt How The Hays Code Censored Cartoons And How Animators Responded by Vincent Alexander We’re living in a strange era of Hollywood self-censorship right now. With physical media dying out and streaming services becoming the default method of watching films, sites like Disney+ are free to scrub out “objectionable” material like Elisabeth Shue’s F-bomb in Adventures in Babysitting and Daryl Hannah’s posterior in Splash, and the censored cut becomes the only cut available. What some people may not be aware of is that there was an earlier attempt at Hollywood self-regulation in the form of the Motion Picture Production Code, popularly known as the Hays Code (named after its founder Will Hays). The Hays Code had strict rules regarding language, sex, nudity, and violence, and Hollywood films of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s had to gain a certificate of approval in order to be released. These rules applied to animated cartoons, which were targeted largely toward adult audiences at the time, as well as live-action features, and the Hays Code is directly referenced in this great gag from the Warner Bros. cartoon A Tale of Two Kitties (1942). [embedded video clip] With the explosion of talkies in the late 1920s, movie studios looked to talent from the New York stage to write dialogue and musical numbers. Studios quickly found that the salaciousness typical of Broadway wouldn’t fly in other parts of the country. cartoonbrew.com/cartoon-study/cartoons-and-the-hays-code-study-225994.html |

Bird of Paradise (1932)
Set your DVRs. Turner Classic Movies will broadcast this movie on Tuesday, December 5th at 10:15am. TCM lists the run time as 90 minutes, while Wikipedia and IMDb dot com both list it at 80 minutes. The extra time may be an introduction by one of the TCM hosts to explain the history and significance of the movie.
Interestingly, the Wikipedia article states that the movie, despite its notoriety, lost $250K at the box office. It also states that Delores Del Rio wore a flesh-colored G-string during her "nude" swim. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_of_Paradise_(1932_film) IMDb states that the native dances were choreographed by Busby Berkeley. It also states that, because this movie is now in the public domain, many of the DVDs being sold are of poor technical quality. imdb.com/title/tt0022689/ |
Another TCM Pre-Code Movie
Turner Classic Movies will broadcast "Flying Down to Rio" (1933) on Friday, January 19th at 11:30am EDT.
This is the movie with the scene of the airplane with the chorus girls strapped to the wing, only to lose their outfits in the wind. |
Yvonne Murray - The Dream Doctor (1936)
7 Attachment(s)
This unusual clip comes from the British short The Dream Doctor from 1936. It's a film that starts out as a clairvoyant charlatan conning rich customers before changing into something completely different when a doctor comes with a patient with an unusual dream and it becomes a film debating and interpreting dreams, with all those featured from real life cases. In this clip the patient (Yvonne Murray) talks about being restrained and escaping a cave, only to find herself in the country in just her nightdress. However, it gets even more saucy when she notices men in the bushes and when the camera switches back to her she is naked hiding behind a bush! I wasn't too convinced of the explanation the quacks gave her (I'm sure Freud would have something to say about "repressed sexual feelings") but it made for a nice surprise and you can see her breasts behind the bushes. To help I've slowed the clip down at the end so you can judge for yourself - or just look at the screenshots I've done. Sadly Yvonne Murray only did this one film, but it's a role I'm sure many would of remembered her from. Enjoy.

I found a copy of this movie and that must be what I watched many years ago. A sexy movie, now I need in better quality.

Metropolis (1927)
This black and white German science fiction movie is noteworthy for its biblical themes set in a dystopian world. The poor labor underground so the elites can live lives of leisure in Art Deco skysc****rs. Turner Classic Movies recently aired a restored version made from lost footage found in 2010 in an Argentinian film museum.
This film has inspired everything from Superman to C3PO in Star Wars to Dr. Strangelove. H.G. Wells thought that it was silly and wrote "Things to Come" as his response. There are a few risque scenes. There are a couple of scenes with dancers who are topless under sheer blouses. And, this scene where Brigitte Helm performs an erotic dance in a nightclub for almost a minute wearing bejeweled pasties. This clip is watermarked, so I can only post the link. aznude.com/view/movie/m/metropolis-5037.html |
