In 2022, someone posted an .iso rip of the original CD-ROM of Americans 1.0 to the Internet Archive. Around the same time someone on 4chan appeared with a full recovery on Mega that was empty by the time I got to it, though I did find an Imgur album that (frustratingly) cropped out parts of every photo and I've posted some samples below.

Did anyone here download the recovery before it vanished? Failing that, could anyone with more technical wizardry take a crack at extracting any images from the .iso? I've had no such luck with the latter.

Any and all help would be much appreciated. Many thanks! :)

Hope someone can help you out, loving all the bush in the previews

It isn't corrupt, it's just old software from a Mac and a pain in the ass to open the files. I was able to open a few files but stopped because it's tedious. But here are the steps.

1. Don't use the built in Windows ISO mount, it doesn't work. I downloaded a free trial of Power ISO (beware it has adware that you have to decline in the install) but I'm sure there's other good ones too.

2. Open the ISO in Power ISO or whatever program you chose and Extract all the files somewhere.

3. Download the program XnView https://www.xnview.com/en/ and open the program and go to General -> Preferences -> General and make sure "Show all graphics formats" is checked.

4. Rename all the photos from the extracted files to .PIC and now you can open them in XnView. This is where I stopped because there's too many files. Could probably run a Windows command line or Powershell script to rename to give them the .PIC file extension in in one go.

There's also an extra file in each folder that shows up as 'Form' in Windows 11, I think it may be a text file? I know I saw some previews with the model's ages, maybe it's that. Not sure what the extension would be for that one seeing as it's from an Apple computer 30 years ago. If someone knows a fast way to rename all the files to .PIC (because there's like 800 of em) then I'm sure it could be re uploaded in a much simpler way.

Thank you for the detailed reply! I'm perfectly happy manually renaming all the extracted files to .PIC (tedium is very much not a problem for me) but I can't for the life of me find an ISO mount that is a. compatible with my computer (running Mac OS X 10.9.5) and b. able to extract any files from the ISO.

If you could post the extracted files somewhere like Mega or bunkr I could take it from there and post the results. I just keep getting stuck on Step 2.

As for the "Form" file, yeah, I imagine that's the models' biometrics, which I'm not terribly interested in

Akira Gomi Photographs - Americans 1.0 - Los Angeles 1993. These images have been published in a book with a similar name and have been widely copied on the web including imagefap.

My attempt at extracting these to .jpg are zipped here https://mir.cr/1US0COJ7
my filenames are in the format nnn-xx.jpg
where nnn is the name of the original directory and xx the original filename.

I'm disappointed by the size of the images ~20kb (sample below) so either this has been a waste of time or my method is flawed. If the latter, then this is what I did:

the .iso contains
macTOPiX Partition Version 2.hfs
[Note to Ludovician: searching for how to mount hfs might help you].

In Windows 10, I used HFS Explorer to mount the .iso and and extract the files, which were in 109 folders.

I used BulkRenamUtility to see all the files in the main folder, rename the files to <foldername>-filename and move them to another folder.

At the windows command line, I renamed the files which did not have a file extension
ren *. *.jpg

But these were not true .jpg images, so I used IrfanView Batch Conversion to convert them from .jpg to .jpg into another folder.

The results are now all in one folder and 21MB in size (the original .iso was 163MB, so I may have lost something). A number of these images may have been part of a collage.

I was just getting to this step when I saw your post. Judging from everything you had to do afterward, I still had a ways to go! Thanks for the hard work.

As far as how small the images are, I suspect the problem lies with the .ISO rip posted to the Internet Archive, because the person who posted a rip to 4chan produced much larger images (below, edited to remove personal info) and the most recent comment on the Archive page mentions the same issue. Unless someone reposts the mega or rips a different copy of the CD this looks to be the highest resolution available.

All the same, thanks again, anonjohn!

so that archived 4chan thread had a weird thing where the photos were almost all cooked BUT the ones that got reposted were archived properly and could be saved
So only got 8 (and a bonus I found while searching) but they are a disproportionately good looking 8 because people wanted to repost them

I think this will also get to all the files, if anyone can sc**** that:

Akira Gomi Is there a scanned version of the americans book?

So I've looked everywhere for a scanned version of the american book but I haven't found it, does anyone have a physical copy that could be scanned?
