Menstruation is not a bodily function that gives a lot of feedback as to it's severity, like say, the need to pee or poo does. Sometimes it starts early, or runs late and the girl gets caught without a pad / tampon. Sometimes it runs heavier than she realizes & the pad or tampon overflows.
