Ah, Jen, you are in the midwest; much more conservative there. I remember I went to a friend's college play in MN. There was a nude scene, with the entire cast nude, but they were in bodysuits. That same play, done on the east coast by a community theatre...everyone was actually nude.

Where I went to college, the theater majors were expected to be nude if the part called for it, regardless. If you didn't like it, you didn't be a theatre major. They all changed together, too. I did music for one play where I was at a piano behind stage, and everyone did quick changes behind stage, right in front of me. Talk about distracting!!! Hard to play a tough piano part when you have 5 sets of breasts in front of your face.

I hear what you are all saying, so I'll probably just have to let it go. But this isn't a case of me being conservative because I'm from the Midwest. Trust me on that. When a director misleads a college freshman about a role and then expects her to be fully nude in front of students and faculty, I think that's taking advantage of the student. This isn't professional theatre - it's college. And if you saw the regular costume shes going to wear, you'd be on my side. And to the person who wants me to post a photo of my friend, that was a joke, right?!

Have you actually voiced your concerns to your friend? If so and she still wants to go through with it then in my opinion all you can do is support her, especially if it doesn't go the way she thinks it should. As a friend I think that's all you can do.

charlz 01-09-2013 03:14 AM

Hmmm

This thread is much ado about nothing(!). Nothing erotic here at all, try an agony aunt at one of the papers please.

tree2 01-15-2013 11:41 AM

I was asked to do the music for some kind of modern theater once. The girls weren't completely naked. Some were clothed normally, but some wore transparent costumes that revealed a lot. Two of them (one extremely hot) undressed completely during the play. I did not know that and could not see it from my booth. So I was pretty shocked when I came together with them after the first rehearsal. They were still naked and were very comfortable with it.

JennMN 01-17-2013 12:11 PM

To the guy who said this isn't erotic enough, I just have to laugh. It's not erotic because it's real and not made up. It's not supposed to be something from Penthouse Forum! I guess I posted this on the wrong site. For those who care, we had our first dress rehearsal this week and all the cast could talk about was my friend's boobs, and this is BEFORE she's done the nude scene. For the first dress rehearsal, the director formally announced to everyone she would be doing the scene naked but she didn't actually do it yet. But as I mentioned before, her costume is so skimpy it doesn't leave much to the imagination. Some of the otehr costumes, including mine, are kinda like that too, but I have a different body build, so it look ok on me. I hate to see the attention my friend is getting and I think it's upstaging the whole show. But I'm thinking my opinion doesn't matter much now.

There are assholes everywhere, and this site is no exception.
There are also people who take other peoples concerns seriously and offer constructive comments.
One advantage to the Internet is that it is easy to totally ignore assholes.

Real women's reactions to unexpected situations in which they are naked in mixed company, or in public... this is EXACTLY the right site to talk about this kind of thing! And this is the right sub-forum, and this is the right thread.

It's all good from my perspective. Maybe you should lighten up and stop posting things that serve no purpose except make you feel like a big man? Don't discourage people if they are on topic and within rules.

JennMN 01-28-2013 03:07 PM

The show just opened, and as expected it got strong reactions. I think the show itself is really good, but the use of nudity has caused a big stir at the university. I guess the director never really got the permission of the right people to do full nudity. And the admin is angry to say the least. I'm kinda glad the director is getting shit, because I feel like my friend was taken advantage of. I think she's a bit sorry she did it now, but the play has two more weeks to run and I don't know if any plans have been made to change it. The newspaper did a story on the show and mentioned the nudity, but of course no pics of that. My friend has gotten even more comments on her apperance than she usually gets, and I know audience members who were visibily shocked to see it emphasized so much. No disclaimers were even printed in the programs in advance, although there was a sign in the lobby talking about no flash photography, no recording devices and that the show contained brief nudity, thought its more than brief in my opinion! But I don't think many audience members saw that. This is one production I'll never forget! I know that.

Just curious - what university is this? Do you have a link to the newspaper article?

And ticket sales are through the roof!

KimL1983 11-09-2013 08:43 PM

Kim here, new member, longtime lurker thanks to crazy friends who introduced me to this site. (I need new friends. LOL). So this is fitting to this topic. Anyone familiar with the musical "Hair"? I was curious about what most colleges and community theaters do with the nudity at the end of the first act. It only lasts about a minute but it’s kinda important to the production. I may be involved with a community theatre production soon, so I want to find out what the current trend is. I think they are gonna decide to not do the nude scene.

However, I have an experience with the musical from about 10 years ago, when I was in a college production of it, and that did feature the nude scene. I was cast before we all knew if the nudity would get approved by the school. We honestly thought it wouldn’t so we were surprised when we were told after casting that the nude scene would be in. We were excited but I know for one I was nervous. I was very self-conscious about my looks back then, especially my chest, or total lack of one. I eventually got over that and it was a really freeing experience, so I have good memories. But the main memory I have from that production – and the thing everybody else remembers to – is one of the actors in the show. He was kind of a dorky freshman at the time and I didn’t know him. I only talked to him a few times during rehersals but I remember when they said we’d do the nude scene, he was nervous when all the other guys were like, yeah, this’ll be crazy and fun. We soon found out why he was nervus when we had our first dress rehearsal for the nude scene. Let’s just say that to this day I’ve never seen a larger penis ever – not in real life, not in porn, not in a zoo. That may sound like a joke but its not. It was so freakish that no one really knew what to say, and I know the director actually thought of either cancelling the plans to do the scene nude, or at least have him not appear in it. But because of the staging, there was no way for him to not be in the scene. It was either do the scene clothed for everyone or kick him out of the production. So it was decided to go ahead with it but have the actor stay toward the back if possible. That didn’t quite work so even though that scene is brief, it totally upstaged everything and even years later is a story that people still tel around campus apparently.

JennMN 11-12-2013 10:59 AM

Thats the kind of nudity more plays should have! I hope you got to know the guy after the play finished its run.

My college put on Hair a few years ago. They did the nude scene, but allowed the actors to take off as much clothing as they felt comfortable. Some went completely nude, some went topless, and some went with full underwear on.

It was a little odd seeing some of those people around campus afterward because they didn't know me, but I knew what they looked like naked.

And after the Play was he still a dork or a hit with all the ladies?:D

KimL1983 11-13-2013 01:11 AM

I would imagine that was true, although I graduated soon after that and never got to know the guy. I do remember the joke around the theater department being that they should do Equus (a show that also has male nudity) the next season and cast him as both the horse and the man.

JennMN 11-14-2013 12:10 PM

This is so much better than the embarrassing story I posted. And you know someone has to ask so I'll do it. Are there photos, more info, the guy's telephone number?? But in all seriousness, I never thought about the issue of stage nudity from a guys perspective. Gotta be odd.

KimL1983 11-15-2013 12:53 PM

That made me laugh. No, if I had all that info I would have posted it. Or dated the guy myself! Like i said, I graduated after that and didn't know the guy. But I'll dig and see what I can find! :D It's funny - I should have guessed mypost would get that attention but I really posted it to ask about "Hair" and what people are hearing about how that show is done now - nudity or not. And to get off my own chest (pun intended) the embarrassment of going naked myself.

JennMN 11-15-2013 02:20 PM

Damn. I tried at least. I did find this: http://nypost.com/2002/11/06/naked-a...own-in-flames/. Looks like this guy was fired from a play for being too well endowed. I guess your friend isn't the only one, or maybe this is your friend!

I'd like to hear more about that. What was it like for you? Where were you on the stage? Was the lighting good enough for people to see you? How much did you show? Was there anyone you know in the audience?

KimL1983 11-16-2013 11:18 AM

Bacon, I tried to post a link to a discussion of Hair so you can understand why the nudity is there. But it says I have to make 10 posts before I can post links. There's a good description on this website called the Tribe Online. If you Google that and Hair nudity, you should see a description. That says the nudity is usually just 20-30 seconds during the final number of the first act. Every production can do it differently and ours lasted a bit longer and wasn't that dim, but maybe it just seemed tha tway to me. I was really nervous during dress rehearsals and the first night but then I realized we were all naked so nobody was really focused just on me. Like i said, that one actor drew all the attention away from everybody, so I was kinda thankful for that although I think it upstaged what was supposed to be a serious scene. It's all about the Vietnam War but all people remembered was a giant male body part. Yes I knew some people in the audience but I was cool with that. Plus I was graduating soon so I figured who cares. Im sure they were looking at the other cast members, not me.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but stuff like this fascinates me, and you seem pretty willing to talk about it.

Did you know there would be nudity when you auditioned for the play? I know Hair has a bit of a reputation, but as you said, some productions leave it out. How many people were on stage with you? What was it like during those dress rehearsals, and again on opening night? Did you go completely nude, or just topless?

ron1234 11-16-2013 11:37 AM

Kim you can just edit the link. Replace http with like hxxp then you can just past it in your message.
I would think most people here have heard of Hair before but you never know.

Yeah, I remember doing that play but was really nervous about doing the nude scene, for me I get camera or stage shy and I shrivelled up with fear, didn't help that I was standing next to a guy like the one you describe
He turned to me during the scene and whispered "don't worry, it's personality that counts"

KimL1983 11-16-2013 12:10 PM

Kimmler, that's too bad. It's a fun musical. If it makes you feel better, that was the reaction of all the guys in the musical when they saw that one actor. Like I mentioned in my first post, we werent sure whether it would contain nudity when we auditioned. We thought it wouldnt but we knew there was a chance. The first dress rehearsal was probably worse than the actual performance because there was no proper lighting. We were just all standing there exposed. It's complete nudity, not just topless, but its tastefully done. And no, Jenn, that's not the same guy. LOL

I agree, its a fun musical and I enjoyed my time in it apart from that scene, wow, they felt the same way too?
Yeah, think we all felt the same way towards him, we were like better not invite our girlfriends down to this as I didn't want to see that.
Oh at the the (un)dress rehearsal he got a lot of looks from the women. I agree that the nudity is tastefully done and I understand that it is not gratuitous.
But on the night I think I must have pissed him off as he said to me during the show to put me off!

Thanks, it does make me feel better. I guess the rest of us guys got stage fright, except for him. Wow, did he feel smug after the opening night. We all got nervous about him round our girlfriends.
Yes, the nudity in Hair is not gratiutious at all. I enjoyed being in it apart from that moment, are you still performing?

What was your reaction when you found out there would indeed be nudity? Did you do any prep for the big night (extra time at the gym? Shaving? Firebomb the local Krispy Kreme?)

JennMN 11-18-2013 11:21 AM

Brunettes, no I don't think that's freaky big. From his description I was expecting it like mutant large. But no complaints. It's big!

KimL1983 11-18-2013 12:06 PM

I should have known this would turn into a conversation about penis size. It was never meant to be about that but thats okay. Kimmler, if it makes you feel better the guy you talked about would have penis envy compared to the guy in the production of Hair I was in.

Bacon, I just remember feeling surprised and nervous but kinda excited. I wasn't ashamed about it. I do remember a couple of the guys saying they would hit the gym or maybe try to get penis enlargements. LOL. For me I just remember praying for boobs.

A couple of you asked about the upcoming productin. I don't know what will happen with that or whether or not I'll be involved, but if I am, I'll post something. I may just be a stage manager this time, and I think the director is leaning toward not doing the nudity. But that may change. It's totally his decision since this isn't a college production this time. It's a community theater production.
