The early days of cable

I was lucky to live in a neighborhood that was one of the first trial locations for cable TV in the country. There wasn’t even a cable box or a guide, we just had a dial with 0-9 and the alphabet. It was mostly public access channels and instead of a weather channel there was literally a radar feed from the local airport, no temp or forecast.

Home Box Office, Cinemax and Showtime were all available, but my parents had figured out that at night Cinemax was soft core porn which my Mom tried to keep us from watching. But she never figured out that Bizarre had naked boobs in every episode. I had told my parents all about Super Dave Osborne, but she had never watched a full episode so she didn’t know about the tits.

I still remember the first time my Dad said he wanted to watch Bizarre with me. We sat down to watch and I kept waiting for a boob sketch wondering how he would react. When it happened he laughed and said, “oh I think I see why you like this show so much!” The episode we were watching had a couple different sketches with topless women and he asked if those sketches were in every show.

I sheepishly nodded.

He paused for a minute and said, “I wouldn’t mention that to Mom.”

It was the first time I had seen my Dad as just a guy who appreciated seeing naked boobs as much as the next guy rather than as an authority figure who might disapprove of nudity.

My Dad has dementia now, and stays with us regularly. Sometimes after my wife goes to bed I will put on a movie that I know has nudity just so he can enjoy it. The circle of life and tits.

The DVDs sadly weren't comprehensive, so there are still sketches out there where the only versions available are the 'censored' versions. However, as previously, the episodes do have short clips in between sketches that include breasts, and some of those clips are the missing boobs.

That means I've been able to 'restore' three sketches by editing in the missing topless clips to the appropriate place. It doesn't restore everything, but it's better than nothing and I suspect all that we'll ever get as I doubt there's enough interest in the show to support some sort of comprehensive remastering for 4k UHD. Though fingers crossed!
