Footlight Parade: Waterfall (1933)
10 Attachment(s)
For my Christmas treat to you before I take a break, this is from another of those Busby Berkley musicals that were so popular in the early 1930's. This one is called Footlight Parade (1933), which starred James Cagney and (yep, you guessed it) Joan Blondell, as well as Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler, and it is her who features in my first of two videos for you today. In one of the spectacular musical numbers, Ruby is called away from a sleeping Dick Powell by some water nymphs to a waterfall and is seen diving into the water seemingly naked (she certainly appears to be under the water). She appears in different costumes a number of times during this number, and pops up a number of times among the other showgirls (Wood Nymphs), whose costumes leave little to the imagination and whose swimsuits of others are somewhat transparent at times. There's also a moment where a girl swims through other girls legs and the camera has an intriguing shot looking straight up! It's a beautiful number, and one that I felt suited posting for Xmas. As usual, I have included a slo mo of Ruby Keeler's underwater swim at the end, as I didn't want to spoil what is a stunning choreographed scene even for Berkley's high standards. Enjoy.

Thanks for these clips. I'd never have guessed there was so much to be had from these old movies.

Footlight Parade: Shanghai Lil (1933)
7 Attachment(s)
My other video for you for Xmas is from the same film, and is the musical climax to the film, Shanghai Lil. It sees James Cagney in one of his rare tap dancing roles with Ruby Keeler, but this short video (compared to the other video) concerns itself with some of the girls in a club Cagney has gone to look for his "Shanghai Lil", which is clearly a brothel and opium den! And some of the girls are only wearing pasties on their nipples, so skimpy are the costumes, while in the opium den some only have strategic hair placed on their breasts to spare the girls blushes. I haven't slo moed this video, as I didn't think it needed it. But for the musical number, check it out on You tube, or for the whole film try ok ru, as it's a superb film on a par with Gold Diggers of 1933 and 42nd Street (all of which starred Ruby Keeler, coincidentally). And I may have a little extra of her for you to follow...

Ruby Keeler

Now I promised you a little bit extra of Ruby Keeler, who before she got into films was another actress like Barbara Stanwyck who was a Ziegfeld girl. There are a few pics that purport to be nudes of Ruby, but most are clearly not her. However, there is one that does look like her, and that is a photo of her from behind looking out a window. I have included it with a couple of other photos of her from that era, as well as a screenshot of her in 42nd Street where she clearly suffers a cameltoe wardrobe malfunction! Ruby herself was married to Al Jolson (amazingly!) from 1928 to 1939, and when she made her breakthrough in 42nd Street in 1933 it was her feature length debut! Indeed she had a superb year in 1933, also appearing in Gold Diggers of 1933 and Footlight Parade, as well as Dames in 1934. Sadly Keeler's career burned bright but briefly, and by the end of the decade her career petered out. She is sometimes unfairly maligned due to her tap dancing skills and acting. She may not of been graceful like Astaire, but she could still dance, and her sweet persona was a nice contrast to her more knowing co-stars Ginger Rogers and Joan Blondell. She made a spectacular comeback on Broadway in 1971 in No, No, Nanette, and lived to the age of 84, passing away in 1993. |
Bird of Paradise (1932)
9 Attachment(s)
To roll out the New Year for the Pre-Code thread, here are a couple of scenes from the film Bird of Paradise from 1932. It features Joel McCrea and Dolores Del Rio (her from my spanking video from Flying Down to Rio here: https://forum.oneclickchicks.com/sho...1&postcount=12) as a sailor who falls for a Hawaiian native, who unfortunately has been promised to be a sacrifice for a volcano (think Joe Versus the Volcano, but the other way round). And playing a Hawaiian, Dolores has only a garland of flowers round her neck to protect her modesty in half of the film, though unfairly she clearly has sticky tape attached to her so she doesn't make a boob (so to speak). However, it doesn't prevent her from having to do a naked swim in one scene that caused a rumpus in the US. In the scene Joel spots her in the water and jumps in after her, chasing her out onto the beach, where she desperately retrieves her wrap to cover herself before he wrestles her to the ground and kisses her forcefully. Which she likes.
The film unsurprisingly was a big hit for her, and went towards her getting the lead in Flying Down to Rio (1933). I've included the naked swim, along with a scene of her with her garland of flowers - mainly because if I'd of included all of those garland scenes the video probably of been 15 minutes long! There's a great line at the end of the video when it rains and McCrea tells Dolores they need to build a house for shelter. "An 'ouse?" she queries. "Yeah, a place to live in - to sleep," said McCrea. Suddenly Dolores' face brightens and she eagerly kisses him as she gabbles away. Joel cottons on and says "Oh yeah, and that too!" before the screen fades to black. No wonder it was popular in it's day. |
Gold Diggers of 1933 Nip Slip
5 Attachment(s)
My 2nd post of Gold Diggers of 1933 for today (the other is on my Pat of Appreciation thread) involves a scene with a unintentional nip slip. The ladies involved are Joan Blondell (of course) and Aline McMahon, who is seen early on in a bath washing herself while Joan sits in front of a mirror combing her hair in just a flimsy negligee that seems very see through at times. However, the nip slip comes from Aline when the scene starts and it brightens from dark to light. I've slowed down that scene at the end of the video, but you can see her nipple and top of her breast when the scene starts. Then two men (Guy Kibbee and Warren William) just walk into the apartment, guardians of Dick Powell's wealthy heir there to pay off his showgirl girlfriend, and mistake Joan Blondell for Ruby Keeler. Joan is ready to throw them out, but Aline is smarter and comes out in her dressing gown determined to screw the pair for their money. Whether she means that literally or not, who knows, but there seems to be meaning in her words when she asks Kibbee his name. "Faneuil." he says. "When I know you better I'll call you Fanny," she replies.

Our Blushing Brides (1930)
5 Attachment(s)
This is another Pre-Code film starring Joan Crawford, in one of her earliest 'Talkie pictures' called Our Blushing Brides from 1930 - though the only blushing presumably would of been from Miss Crawford herself, after seeing this scene! In this clip, Joan is helped out of her frock by Louise Beavers, but what the wardrobe department doesn't seem to of noticed is just how see-through her underwear actually is! As she goes to look at herself in the mirror, you can clearly see Joan's backside, and even when she turns round it leaves little to the imagination at times from the front! And the scene itself sees Robert Montgomery come into her room while she is in her underwear, leading to a embarrassed Joan to turn around and tell him "Perhaps you can't see so well over there? Why don't you come inside and get a good look?" And wouldn't you know, he says "Thank you. I was just waiting to be invited" and waltzes straight in! He even sits down to watch her, which isn't what Joan was expecting, and she's none too happy about it. I don't know though what gave me the greater shock in this scene - seeing Joan in barely there underwear, or the moment where Louise Beavers tells her she'll go and get her a Coca Cola! Joan was strictly a Pepsi girl!

The Barbarian (1933)
8 Attachment(s)
This clip is from The Barbarian from 1933, a film that would likely never get shown today for many reasons. It was an attempt to recreate the "Sheik" films of the 1920's, with it's theme of "frigid white woman is kidnapped by randy Arab and made to submit in every way to 'free' her from Western inhibitions" that was popular back then. Think along the lines of Dennis Potter for more 'modern' reference. However, what I didn't expect to see was Myrna Loy - from The Thin Man films, and here playing the lead role - naked in a Arabian bath, with only rose petals to spare her blushes. Needless to say, it leaves very little to the imagination, and she is attended to and then dried and dressed by a number of Arab women.
The scene itself is a precursor to a plot by Jamil (Roman Novarro), the said randy servant who has misdirected her to a Arab Palace out in the desert under false pretentions for a randy prince that also lusts after Loy, and leaving her unable to escape. You don't see what happens - either in this video or the film - but Jamil's conscience is pricked when he hears her screams when she is whipped by the Prince into submission, bursting in to 'save' her before he can have his way with her, but because the only way to escape is with Jamil, Loy has to submit to his orders to do so, and later makes her 'submit' to him before taking her to his tribe to arrange a wedding ceremony. She does escape before the "I do" part, but in one of the most peculiar twists to this film, when she gets ready to marry her own English fiancé she hears Jamil - now wanted by police - singing outside her window, and decides that he is the man she really loves! Add to that the fact that Loy's mother helps in this elopement because she is apparently half Egyptian and she is later there for the honeymoon and you have one of the most peculiar films of the Pre Code era! As I said, they'd never make this stuff today! One final note, and that is on Loy herself. She started out originally as a model and dancer to make ends meet, and like with Barbara Stanwyck and Ruby Keeler she seems to of done nude modelling too. I've added one of those pics I was able to find at the bottom of the screenshots for you to admire. Anyway, enjoy the video. |
Ms Loy
Ms Loy was a very goooodd actress and had great screen presence. She was great in the Thin Mam and mannyy other films. I think she also had a very sexy voice. To see her in this shows that she.had another side to he but in reality they all did and appearing naked or near naked was more to put food on the table or, for sinister purposes, to allow a studio to exert power over a woman when she became a star later.

Kiss and Make Up (1934)
7 Attachment(s)
This clip comes from the film Kiss and Make Up from 1934, about a beauty clinic run by Cary Grant. Naturally with the surgeon being Cary Grant, women flock to go there, and Grant finds himself snared by one such client (Genevieve Tobin), much to the ire of her husband (Edward Everett Horton). Sadly Grant's character is too self absorbed to notice his loyal secretary (Helen Mack) is in love with him, and ends up taking her with him and Tobin on their honeymoon to work.
What is such a delightful surprise in this film is a scene where Helen Mack gets to escape from office work to go swimming in a bathing costume, encountering Tobin's ex (Horton) on a raft in the sea. Even more of a surprise is just how see through that bathing costume is of Mack's, revealing more of the lovely lady than I doubt she imagined. They certainly didn't tell her to change costumes when it came to the final edit, that's for sure! As for Mack, she started out as a child star in the silent era before having her biggest success in the 1930's, being best remembered for the lead in Son of Kong (1933), as well as roles in The Milky Way (1936) and His Girl Friday (1940). She retired from films in 1945, and died in 1985, aged 72, but with her looks she should of had a much longer career. By the way, I've slowed down those swimming costume moments for you, just so you can judge better Helen's undoubted 'star talents.' |

Red Dust - Niagara Falls (1932)
6 Attachment(s)
This clip from the Pre Code era of films comes from Red Dust in 1932, and is the famous "Niagara Falls" scene involving Jean Harlow taking a bath in the water tank, before getting into a barrel. Although you don't get to really see anything, I thought I'd include it here after uploading another clip from the film in the Pat of Appreciation thread here: https://forum.oneclickchicks.com/sho...&postcount=114. However, according to legend, after they finished filming the scene Harlow stood up naked from her barrel in front of the cameramen and famously said "Here's one for the boys in the lab." Let's just hope they have the footage lying about somewhere!

First Show - Murder at the Vanities (1934)
10 Attachment(s)
This is one of 4 videos (yes, four!) from the film Murder at the Vanities from 1934, which pushed the limit of what it could show back then and is said to of hastened the introduction of the Hayes Code because of it. A unusual murder mystery set during the opening night of a burlesque theme show, this 1st video sees Kitty Carlisle singing "Where Do They Go To?" while she goes about showing off a bevy of near naked lovelies posing on stage representing various themes, such as Cigarette Girls, Cowboys, and Compact Girls, with only pasties or strategically placed clothing sparing their modesty. The song can be a bit wearing at times, but the girls keep on coming, and the acts to follow would get even more revealing. The hardest part of doing this? Trying to pick which screenshots to upload on here - there are so many to choose from!

Island Show - Murder at the Vanities (1934)
10 Attachment(s)
The 2nd video from Murder at the Vanities (1934) this time has Carl Brisson stranded on a desert island while the showgirls are dressed as water nymphs and waves. Even better, Kitty Carlisle pops up as Eve, complete with barely there fig leaves covering all the girls modesties as best it can - though they obviously weren't bothered about covering up the girls bare bottoms, which can be clearly seen at times. Apparently among the showgirls in the film (whether this act or one or the others) are Lucille Ball and Ann Sheridan, and although I didn't spot either of them, you can spot Toby Wing in some of the acts, playing a giggling blonde in the film desperate to tell the director something but continually being ignored. As it is, she has the clue to the whole murder mystery. Oh, didn't I say it was a murder mystery? You may begin to wonder that when watching this!

Sweet Marijuana - Murder at the Vanities (1934)
8 Attachment(s)
The 3rd video and stage show from Murder at the Vanities (1934) is the one that caused the most rumpus among the Hayes Code brigade. As well as showing a bevy of nude girls in flowers, with only their hands to cover their modesty (and it's quite disconcerting that the 4th girl in the flowers looks like Gracie Fields!), the song being sung by Gertrude Michael during the act is a song called "Sweet Marijuana!" Among all this is a police investigation into murder attempts (led by Victor McLaglen), but he is more interested in checking out the showgirls. "Why don't you take your lamps off those dames and do some police work?" says stage manager Jack Oakie. "This IS police work," grins McLaglen. "Those babies look like they've got clues or something." And on spotting one girl he adds "Now there's a baby over there that looks suspicious and ought to be followed," before going over to one girl climbing up the steps just to ogle her backside! You also get to see Toby Wing in this video, while at the end of the act it even shows us the moment when one of the girls discovers a dead body. It's quite effective...

Jazz Act - Murder at the Vanities (1934)
8 Attachment(s)
The 4th and final video from Murder at the Vanities (1934) (not including the video I posted in A Pat of Appreciation thread, that is) sees a jazz act involving none other than Duke Ellington playing the piano, while Gertrude Michael and a host of black girls among the showgirls dance about in see through costumes and thongs! You can clearly see the breasts of some of the girls in this act, which also includes another murder during the act! That happens to the unfortunate Miss Michael, whose backside you see when she hits the floor during a machine gun finale that is part of the act. Unfortunately a live bullet was not, and Gertrude ends up hitting the deck. In real life, Gertrude Michael - best known for the Mae West film I'm No Angel (1933) - died herself aged just 53, at the stroke of midnight on the final day of 1964 of 'natural causes.' Now that's spooky!

Pert Kelton - The Bowery (1933)
10 Attachment(s)
This video is from The Bowery (1933), which was about two rival bar owners and firemen (yes, really!), played by Wallace Beery and George Raft, and would likely not see the light of day in this day and age. The casual violence, gangsters, illegal booze, cabaret showgirls in skimpy costumes and a scene where innocent Fay Wray is chatted up by two blokes clearly looking to put her into prostitution would of had the Hayes code in a fit back then, but today it would be the casual racism that would see this barred. The very first thing you see in this film is an eye opener, while the farcical scene where the rivals fight each other to be the first to put out a fire where Chinamen are stuck in a burning building is surreal.
As it is, this video concerns the two cabaret acts that perform in Wallace Beery's bar, headed by the unlikely named Pert Kelton as head showgirl. The 1st act features the girls dressed as Can Can Dancers, the 2nd as Sailor Girls, with the girls wearing skimpy knickers barely covering their bums, while their tops barely contained their bosoms. But the one you can't take your eyes off is Pert herself, who is probably the best thing in the film. Pert really WAS her real name - named after a character in a play by her grandma - and she livened up many a film in the 1930's (check her out in Sing and Like It from 1934). Here she throws herself into the role with gusto, but the most memorable thing in this is her singing. Let's just say I had never heard anything like it - and after this, neither will you! Memorable is an understatement... |
The Fireman of the Follies Bergere (1928)
10 Attachment(s)
This is a short from 1928, and is one of the most explicit uses of nudity of that time. No mere suggestion or skimpy costumes, these girls in this don't wear ANY costumes! The plot involves a fireman come out of viewing showgirls at the Follies Bergere and enjoy a few drinks at a bar, but soon begins to visualize all the women around him stark naked! That begins at the bar, but as he leaves to go to work he continues to see either women without their clothes on - such as on a bus - or men turn into naked women (such as when viewing his colleagues on a fire engine). The fact that it mentions Josephine Baker in the cast should of given a clue to viewers what to expect, as she was the burlesque queen of the era and all round class act. Surprisingly she doesn't appear nude, (unless she's one of the fire girls at the end) but plenty of other women do, and it's fascinating to see women of that era naked like that. Enjoy.

Helen Mack - While Paris Sleeps (1932)
7 Attachment(s)
Do you remember Helen Mack, who I posted in a clip from the film Kiss and Make Up (1934) on here in that rather see through swimsuit? (The link to the video to jog memories can be found here: https://forum.oneclickchicks.com/sho...9&postcount=50). Well, it turns out the lovely Miss Mack actually dispensed with the swimsuit in a Pre Code film 2 years previously called While Paris Sleeps (1932), which involved the innocent Helen wandering around Paris trying to make an honest living, unaware there are people somewhat eager to get her into a life of prostitution. (Who'd of thought it?) As it turns out, her father (Victor McLaglen) - the man she believes died in WW1 - has actually escaped from prison to look for her and save her from her fate. (Spoilsport!)
This particular scene involves Helen getting undressed to have a wash behind a see through screen and just a basin after being given accommodation by a girl friend. However, as she is washing, the girl's boyfriend comes in and sees her, sneaking in & taunting her when she realizes by stealing her towel while she stands naked, unable to do much at all. The scene is only interrupted by the girl returning to catch boyfriend in the act and walloping him, but despite the film's age you do get to glimpse brief breast shots and a nude Helen behind the screen. I have naturally slowed down the scene at the end of the video for you to see for yourself, but it was a nice surprise to see Helen out of that swimsuit. As for further interest in the fair Helen's breasts, check out her top in the film She (1935). I've only seen stills, but that top she is wearing is wonderfully snug! |
Sally's Sunbath (c. 1928-1930)
5 Attachment(s)
From the silent film era, circa 1928-1930. Found this on the Internet Archive, heard about it a long time ago but finally managed to see it. Not bad at all, nice classic "stolen clothes" ENF scenario.
Sally is a woman who has been reading about the healthful benefits of naturism. She decides to disrobe and let the sun's rays sink into her body. What she doesn't know is that an absolute nutball named Percy Popeye is in the same area. Another goof named Gurlock Moans -- who is studying to be a detective -- spots Sally's clothes hanging on a tree. He assumes a murder or other crime has taken place and of course he takes her clothing as a clue. By now, Sally and Percy have noticed one another, and Sally soon notices that her clothes are missing. She and Percy must work together to retrieve them. Enjoy. |

The Smiling Lieutenant (1931)
6 Attachment(s)
A short but sweet clip from the days of Pre-Code, this is from The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) and features Miriam Hopkins in only her 3rd film in Hollywood. She plays a Princess who mistakes a wink Maurice Chevalier makes at his girlfriend Claudette Colbert for her and falls in love with him - meaning Chevalier has to marry her! Colbert realizes the situation is hopeless for her, so teaches Miriam how to dress sexily before bidding her goodbye - and giving her a full girl on girl kiss on the lips! That scene is included, as is the scene of Miriam in her negligee, which when she turns round to go to bed seems somewhat see through and gives us a glimpse of Miriam's cheeky features. Naturally I've slowed this for a better look. I do wish I'd had something better for you for Christmas, but I'm sure some of you will like seeing this - and of course of two girls locking lips together!
As for Miriam Hopkins, this was the start of a successful Pre Code career, and she gained a reputation for risqué roles, such as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1931) (as a prostitute), Trouble in Paradise (1932), Design For Living (1933) (involving a menage a trois) and the highly controversial The Story of Temple Blake (1933), which hastened the Hayes code. Ironically, this code - along with her famous temper - eventually curtailed Hopkins' career, despite roles in Becky Sharp (1935) and The Old Maid (1939), and by the 1950's she was mainly in television. Her last film was in 1970 and she died of a heart attack two years later, aged 69. |
Don't the girls also sing a song called something like "Hooray for Lingerie"?

There are two pre-code Marx Brothers films that contain EUF scenes. One's in Duck Soup, during Harpo's "Paul Revere" ride, and the other is in A Night at the Opera. The Night at the Opera scene is quite risque as Harpo tears the skirts off three women during a musical number. The main actress is very attractive, and is wearing surprisingly modern looking panties (which Harpo actually attempts to rip off at one point!). I could only find one still from the Duck Soup scene. Anyone have the clips?

Mary Cole - Poppin' the Cork (1933)
7 Attachment(s)
This little curio comes from a short starring Milton Berle and was released in 1933 just months after the end of prohibition. This film clearly calls for the relaxing of rules, and in this dance sequence involving Mary Cole that seems to extend to the costume she is wearing. Starting out in a dress while showgirls dance about behind her as cocktail glasses, she then strips off to reveal just a slip underneath. And what becomes apparent is that she seems to of abandoned her underwear underneath it also, as not only is it clear she isn't wearing a bra, but when she turns round to dance about, you get to see her bare bottom as well! I've slowed that piece of footage for you at the end of the video (naturally), but as I hadn't seen this before I thought you might all like to see this cheeky little number too. As for Mary, this was her debut appearance, and she only appeared in 3 other films in the 1930's before disappearing from the screen. She died aged only 61 in 1975 - but what memories she leaves behind here!

Jeanette MacDonald - One Hour With You (1932)
5 Attachment(s)
A minor clip from the Pre-Code era, but one that was lurking about in my folder that I felt shouldn't be wasted. This video comes from the film One Hour With You (1932) and stars Jeanette MacDonald, who is getting ready in her bedroom for a party she is throwing later that night, and answers the telephone in just a thin negligee. The scene itself has a amusing twist that I shan't reveal so as not to spoil the scene, but is clearly Pre-Code in it's punchline. But what's more intriguing is noticing that Jeanette's negligee is somewhat see through and you can see her breasts under her top. The nightingale voiced Jeanette made 4 Pre-Code films with Maurice Chevalier (this is one of them) that are well worth checking out, but she is best remembered for her partnership on (and off) screen in a number of enjoyable musicals with Nelson Eddy, though they never married. She died in 1965, aged 61, and Nelson Eddy just 2 years later.

Wannabe Showgirl - Glorifying the American Girl (1929)
7 Attachment(s)
These two videos (the 2nd to follow this post) come from the film Glorifying the American Girl from 1929, which is one of the early 'talkies' of the Hollywood era. It is also one of the very first to use colour, which is used for good effect in the stage acts near the end of the film (but we'll get to that later). It is also one of the first full length films to use nudity, and some of the costumes (when the girls are wearing them) are barely there. One such example is in this scene, where Dan Healy sees a showgirl who has caught his eye and makes a proposition to her that will give her a chance of stardom, but leaves in no doubt what she will have to do to earn it. I sadly do not know who the actress is in this scene, but her top is basically two tassels attached to her nipples, which means it leaves little doubt what her breasts look like!

Stage Acts - Glorifying the American Girl (1929)
10 Attachment(s)
The 2nd video from this film is from the climatic stage acts in the film, which is shot in colour. What's more interesting is that there are two versions, and if you are lucky to get the colour version, it contains nudity from the showgirls in the acts. I've decided to combine all the acts in one video, to make it easier, but in the 2nd act the blonde actress is Mary Eaton, who is seen topless underneath her blouse. A number of the girls are either naked or wearing sheer fabric, and in one scene it contains Tarzan's very own Johnny Weissmuller with a naked girl kneeling down (don't worry, I've marked the pic which one it is of him). This is early Hollywood history, but also shows how liberal they were back then in including nudity in their films. Sadly that would change in 1934, but it's lovely to see how it was back then. Anyway, enjoy.

putting this out there to other fans of these old movies....
Many Years ago I watched a movie on Pbs about a stripper. I could swear it was dixie lee but Im finding no record of the name. It was a b+w movie following the life of this stripper. Not a documentary but I guess fictional story about the main character. She starts out in tableau scenes nude on stage and becomes a stripper. Not much to go on but please keep a look out for me. Jean Carter & Novita - Too Hot To Handle (1950)
10 Attachment(s)
Two more acts that appear in the vaudeville/strip film Too Hot To Handle (1950), first up is Jean Carter, who also appears in a couple of the comedy vaudeville acts. She starts by singing a song about peanuts, while dishing some out to the audience for some reason, leading to the great line "There he sits up against the wall. I bet he doesn't have any nuts at all!" Then she does her strip act, where she goes topless. The 2nd act involves a girl called Novita, a small breasted sweet looking girl who does a Spanish dance while stripping. As I have few screenshots for these two, I thought I'd put the two together in a post for you to enjoy.

Patti Waggin - Too Hot To Handle (1950)
10 Attachment(s)
My own personal favourite out of the ladies who are called upon to strip in this vaudeville/comedy film is the girl whose act ends the film, and that is Patti Waggin. Not only does she remind me of a naughtier version of Gloria Talbot (look up We're No Angels from 1955 to see who I mean), but she is cutesy, coy, lively and occasionally a little blushing. Enjoy.
