I feel for the girl, as it almost appeared that her incident was met with scorn rather than understanding and patience.

there's really not much more 'detailed story' to tell.
The back hinge broke just before the race was to begin, and she didn't have time to change into another.
She would have known that rules are rules, and she definitely would have been more horrified at missing the race then having her rear exposed. (If you believe media reports, some European female swimmers couldn't care less who sees them naked, as some after a race change out of their suits before they reach the change rooms)
Which reminds me of another story. At last years Olympics, one of the Aussie female's suit tore minutes before they were about to walk out to the pool. Now you have to remember all these girls would be as nervous as hell in the lead up to a gold medal race.
When she noticed, she started balling her eyes out and was a complete wreck as two or three others(including a guy..may have been her coach or an Aus official) quickly began ripping the torn suit off and squeezing her into another.
Apparently it takes forever to properly fit into these latest suits..anyway she got suited up in time and must have composed herself when she reached the starting blocks, cause she ended up winning the gold
