I'll be damned. I had this exact same thought when viewing this thread the other day. I just couldn't put it into words. Needless to say, I'm just as confused as you are. :confused:

I don't know if it's counter-intuitive so much as it is hypocritical. But maybe that's a bit harsh...

Someone in another thread had the same thoughts a while back. All i could say was that nudists themselves are divided. On the one hand you have the more intellectual, body acceptance types who tend to be the ones that write about nudism and what its all about (to them). On the other hand, you have the Les Cook types who are more fun loving and don't really care what the literary-minded nudists think. They're the ones that sponser the pageants, and since they make money for the clubs, everyone on both sides sort of keeps their mouth shut.

Also, the standard line about naturism and what its all about is something that has been crafted over the years in part to appease puritans, censors, lawyers, politicians, etc.

Here's whats interesting to me: The earliest nudists were German's and they crafted a lot of the ideology about the body and paved the way for modern naturism. But a lot of them were also aryan supremicists who really thought that their bodies were more beautiful than anyone else's. Thats a contradiction too.

And over at rec.nudes, vicious fights between the two camps (exhibitionist and intellectual nudists) have been going on for years. Its like the israelis and Palastinians. It will never end.

In my view, there are mainly 2 movements in nudism, one of nudists who are (a bit) conservative, have strict rules such as no drinking/alcohol, vegetarians, strict ballotage, no men/woman alone or gay/lesbian, do everything in harmony with nature etc. (like the traditional lichtbund/ light union) and a movement of more progressive nudists, naturists who also accept gays/lesbians, men and woman alone, alcohol, meat, smoking, non members of their club, miss elections, people who join their club only for a holiday.
