Here are directions for how to cut it into pieces (you won't need to download any software):
You almost certainly have a program called "Windows Movie Maker" (WMM) that comes included standard with Windows. If you look under Start > Programs, you should see it (often it's listed below Windows Media Player). Once you open it, click on File > Import into collections. Select the video file and click import. It may take a few minutes, but the video will import in WMM. You should see a screen cap of it in the center of your screen. Grab the screen cap and drag it down to the time line at the bottom of the screen. Now the movie is ready to cut it into pieces.
You can cut it into clips however long or short you want. Let's say you want them to be 3 minutes each. All you have to do is scroll along the bottom until you come to the 3-minute mark on the timeline. Then double click the cursor on that point. A verticle line should appear on the timeline. Next, go up to the top of the screen and click Clip > Set end trim point. Now you have a clip that is the first three minutes of the movie. Go to File > Save move file... (NOT Save project) and save the clip to your hard drive.
You just repeat that process to make more clips. You'd clear the timeline (i.e. delete the short clip you just created on the bottom), then drag the full movie back down to the timeline (as you did in the begining), move the cursor to the 3-minute mark, go to Clip > Set start point (you want the second clip to start here), then move the scroll bar on the bottom to the 6-minute mark, double click it, go to Clip > Set end trim point, then File > Save move file... and you have the second clip for the next three minutes.
Hope that makes sense.
