Definitely the places you mentioned, although sometimes being a lone wolf in those settings can cause suspicion. One of my favorites is outdoor fairs and markets, especially farmers markets. There are often bins that require leaning over or squatting, thus creating great opportunities. Shops can also work, although, there are not that many places where both men and women regularly browse in same sections, although a bust bookstore can be great.

Dane John and Westgate gardens are good hunting grounds as you can pretend to be taking pics of scenery

The steps of cathedrals and museums are good places too. When they sit on the top step you can stand right behind them and probably get some good "above the brim" at the same time.

Thanks for the heads up - I know the place, and will get there as soon as I have a chance and the weather is good!

Now, for my one hundreth post, a few more of my own shots from in and around Canterbury. Not great, but I am just a beginner...
