Thought this might be worth posting, though now four months after the event... It's quite a small gallery that's had a thou some views, so may be new to some here and includes some nice, rare candids of some of the Brighton favourites- panties off, shades off etc.

Thanks for all the Philly & Portland stuff btw, have been paying more attention this year to the US rides since there doesn't seem to be such a swamp of UK images. Really great stuff. Though I haven't seen that discussed much here, the relative paucity of 2017 UK images- am I getting rusty at finding stuff? I mean, there's plenty, but seemingly much fewer than the last couple of years.

Not of course that I give it too much thought, but I have a theory about the almost complete lack of Cardiff photos this year. I chanced upon a pre-ride local news TV studio interview with an old transgender guy who's ridden for a few years, albeit with a new sexy young female friend who rode- two minutes of my life I'll never get back. But this year apparently there was some incident at the river with kids throwing stones at WNBR participants? Don't know what audience the local news gets but, I simply wondered if the three happenstances might be connected...

Biggest Threat to WNBR (especially PNBR)

1 Attachment(s)
PNBR was great this year! My 4th year of the Philly WNBR, best I have personally attended. Something else stuck me at the event this year, more cameras (and smartphones) than I've ever seen. I expected a great year of flickr finds etc...but the number of photos (and quality) from this specific event is down. What does this mean: more cameras will scare off those with privacy concerns, meanwhile we the fans get less of the photos we expect.

An example: The girl with the red paint and amazing abs should have been posted 10,0000 times with the attention she received...I've found about a half dozen good photos.

Don't want this to turn to a b*tch and moan thread, but my final two cents until next year: IF YOU TAKE A BUNCH OF PICS, BY GOD POST THEM! DON'T SCARE OFF THE TALENT AND HORDE THE PICS!

I've seen hundreds of photos from Brighton 2017 and she isn't in any.

Regarding the Cardiff ride, in Folkestone I spoke to a guy who had done it. Apparently the problems they had were started by a fella who took exception to naked people riding about in public and encouraged a group of youngsters to attack the participants with stone and rocks. As you can imagine, this rather put a dampener on proceedings and I think quite a lot of riders bailed at that point. Not sure if the shortage of pictures is related to this incident.

As for the lack of pictures from UK rides overall, I think at least in part it's that folks just aren't putting their images online, at least nowhere publicly accessible. The Brighton ride - traditionally the best of the UK bunch - is 'policed' by some absolutely dreadful feminazis who go out of their way to make life difficult. They had the cops remove one guy from Old Steine this year - he might have been a perv snapping bums and bits (I don't know, I just saw him being led away) but it's a public place and as long as you don't break the law, you can do what you like. Very dangerous precedent and this sort of thing will put off a lot of the more serious snappers. This in turn means there will mostly just be fifth rate phone snaps and such out there. They also had some mime artists capturing people loitering around the painting area at The Level in nets - this I thought was quite funny. But why the hell don't they just put opaque stuff round that area?

A number of the regulars who put pics online were also absent this time round, such as SL50AZ. Also, quite a few of the former regular riders didn't turn out this year either. I guess it all combined to make 2017 a somewhat less than vintage year.

With all due respect, I'm not convinced. People on here have been forecasting that for a couple of years now, not least riders who've posted hoping to influence the behaviour of photographers. But I genuinely don't see any definitive decline.

Yes, 2014 and 2015 were stand-out years across most UK rides in terms of numbers of female riders- probably largely because both were great weather-wise. The weather in 2016 was really grim, and despite that, in 2017 Bristol had its highest ever number of partially and fully nude women; Manchester came close to matching its highest.

What is maybe changing is the number of photos easily available, and this is in line with what participants want. Personally I'd much prefer to have fewer photos of more women than more photos of fewer women. Yes, Cardiff had a weird year this year, but tbh for me it's only ever been a couple of notches above the naturist-only provincial rides, and has yielded top class stuff rarely (again, 2015 was lovely). It did have a decent number of female participants this year- a not unusual number- just hardly any photos for the various reasons that have been speculated.

2017 was a solid year across the UK rides, despite or maybe even because of the stranger political backdrop. I can't speak for international rides, and my guestimates of the huge London and Brighton numbers are not infallible. But I've read lots of predictions of 'peak-WNBR', and the reality looks very different to me, at least. We may have a better idea in a couple of months when the dates are set and FB ride pages posted, but again- especially so in 2014 and 2015- there is very little correlation indeed between the number who sign up on FB, and the number who actually ride.

Just my tuppence worth!

Pedro the Fisherman 01-13-2018 08:30 AM

What the UK rides needs, is in short supply........warm, sunny weather! I think that affects female attendance as much as the hoards of intrusive snappers.

Get naked and ride yourself (as I used to do) you can snap away and seldom get refused a lovely pose from most of the delightful ladies.

Interesting thread. 2017 was my first WNBR. I really enjoyed the experience and have no problem being photographed by respectful photographers (lots of my pics have been posted here - I'm 'real person' and 'VIP'). Flickr is great as I'm usually tagged there (by somebody) which I prefer as it enables me to keep a record of photos of myself. And I'm grateful for some of the great photos that I have had taken of myself.

London was particularly uncomfortable however. I started at Hyde Park and the scrum of photographers was pretty full-on. Some literally jumped in front of me and got run over (by the many riders). You can generally see from my expression where somebody has leapt out from behind a tree in order to take a pic. I think this kind of behaviour is unfortunate and will definitely put off potential (female) newbies...and in general it is the women who are targeted in this way. As far as I'm concerned there is no need for this to happen as if I'm asked politely by a photographer if they can take my pic I would be happy to oblige - and in general (from my experience) most other female riders feel the same way. There are 1000s of photographers taking pics along the routes so anybody taking part does so with the knowledge that they're going to get snapped (unless they're incredibly naive).

The other potential issue that I can see that may be turning people off from taking part in the WNBR is what happens to the images once they are processed and ready to be revealed to the world. I love to show off my pics but not everybody feels the same way. Anybody taking part must realistically accept that images will appear online (hence disguises perhaps for some) but I think sometimes things get a bit out of hand and the potential implications could prove too much for some. The prospect of trying to establish true identities and inappropriate commentary are things that potential WNBR riders never quite anticipated when they signed up to participate. If images were merely viewed, shared and appreciated without all of the weird stuff I'm sure a LOT more people (female riders) would be happier to participate.

My experience has been fantastically positive and I appreciate the support but I am perhaps coming from a different place where I love to be photographed and love to have people see the results...respect, politeness and general decency is all I ask for.

NakedLu, I am a big fan of your flickr account, and loved your vimeo account as well (while it lasted). Thanks for sharing your experiences and views about the WNBR. Perhaps some people will take notice of what you wrote, and your effort might make things a little bit better next time (I'm hopeful, but won't be holding my breathe tho). You're a breath of fresh air. Thanks

Not entirely sure if there ever was a golden age of WNBR. The past two London rides were excellent, much more fun than Brighton for me personally. The situation at the latter has reached a pretty stupid level of misplaced paranoia now. The hypocrisy is staggering and hardly bodes well for the future. Trying to encourage riders to refuse permission for photos even from respectable snappers (press, naturist lifestyle mags, cycle journals and such) is just ludicrous. And yet that's what happened at the 2017 Brighton ride.

The past two or three Manchester and Bristol rides were also extremely good. They certainly don't seem to be in decline. I do think most of the minor rides are a bit pointless, if I'm honest. Saying that, I covered and very much enjoyed the small Canterbury and Folkestone rides in 2017. You turn up with a camera and people are actually pleased to see you at these :D

Weather plays a pretty big part, of course. And the frankly unacceptable and intrusive behaviour of some people prying into the everyday lives of certain riders has cost WNBR some of its biggest stars. But turnout remains high, new faces appear each year and the rides are generally well received and increasingly accepted as genuine protest events.

The whole snapper paranoia thing (only really an issue at the Brighton ride) could be helped significantly by issuing official passes. But this is discussed year after year and nothing ever comes of it.

Repeat London rider candid shots

Ok, I've been back over this thread a couple of times but I think the post which originally highlighted this rare money-shot of a popular, regular rider in London may have disappeared in the great purge that happened after Brighton. Apols if I missed it and that the photo is a repost- credit to the original poster.

Anyway here's an Al*my photo with a better angle. The link is ridiculous but I didn't want to tiny URL it as that would give a live link. She's so handy with that fanny pack that these are real rarities; if anyone's such a fan of her that you want to shell out £12 for the full image I'd appreciate a copy as a finders fee!

yeah, but its a low res image. You can actually see something in those pictures if you edit the levels.
But in high res, it would add a lot more definition. I dont feel like paying for it though.
We need to set up an OCC users fund for this kind of stuff ;)

Although I have noticed this:-

If you haven't used the Image/Footage file you can cancel the Licence and get a full refund within 30 days of the Invoice date.

You'll need to send us an email sales@alamy.com, with the Invoice number (e.g. IY11110000) and the Image file number (e.g. AT4WHG). If you cancel, you won’t be able to use the Image file and you’ll need to remove it from your archives.
so if someone feels like going through the effort, its possible to get it for free.

Well, we will be attending our first nude event this year, it will be the Finnish naked race "NAKKUKYMPPI", there are alot less participents and alot less photographers than for ex the london WNBR. And we also plan on going to the Brighton wnbr, and lets face it, my fiance is one hot 39 YO mother of 2, and she will certainly get photographed over and over again, this is acutally something that might put us off from this event.

Neither her or I are the least bit shy, we are nudists whenever possbile, and this photo was taken outside a nudist camping in Sweden, then i photoshopped it a bit as a poster for the Nakkukymppi, she is Finnish and i am Swedish and we have really been looking forward to join some nude races. BUT, there is this factor of too much photos getting spread in the wrong way on the net....

The nude run in Padasjoki won't be a problem. As you probably know, it's off the beaten track, only about 3,000 people live there, and a lot of the race is in woods and fields.

I don't recognize them from that picture. Do you have any more information, like which ride they were at? Since there are thousands of pics and dozens of videos from the big UK rides, I'd be surprised if we couldn't find something if we knew where to look.

Funk Dooby uploaded 10+ Brighton and London videos a little over a week ago. Don't get your hopes up that they're going to be even remotely like the extreme level of quality of his photos, which are some of the best ever taken (see below), but they're very nice. They appear to be done with a GoPro or some other very small, ultra-wide angle camera, and you can tell he's putting most of his efforts into his fantastic DSLR shots (you hear the shutter going off almost constantly). With that said, though, they're good quality, good length videos shot from great locations, and that's a great thing to see during the long winter lull.

For anyone just joining us :), his photos are at flickr.com/photos/funkdooby/tags/wnbr. His 2014 shots on the beach at Brighton, in particular, are legendary. If I remember correctly, he's asked people not to repost his Flickr photos anywhere, and I would assume the same would apply to his videos.

The Flickr photos seem to be removed now.

I'm betting this is the age old problem of either not being logged in or having Safe Search on. First screen shot: not logged in. Second screenshot: the same URL when I'm logged in, with Safe Search off.

Funk loves Cristina, the tall, slender brunette. And I follow him, and his account is fine.

Thanks. Had turned off Safe search earlier, but for some reason it had turned back on. Page is working now.

It appears only one went topless for the Brighton ride.

I decided to use a GoPro (Hero 2, an older one with quite poor image quality) after seeing a guy snapping at a BMX event with an action cam mounted on his DSLR hot shoe.

Main problem with snapping and shooting video at the same time is the instinct to lower the camera after taking shots. And the constant rattle of the shutter. And the fact that every time you go for the second camera (if you're using two), you just get random footage of the floor and such. The waterproof housing also shuts out most sound from more than a short way off.

I had no intention of ever uploading any of the video footage but someone I know watched a couple of clips and liked the fly-on-the-wall experience of what it's like to actually be there taking pics in the midst of the madness. So I put some of it online. Next time round I intend to mount the video camera on a cap. I don't think it would be possible to shoot decent stills and video simultaneously but there's no harm in having a go :D

I have no problem with anyone reposting my snaps (or vids), either here or anywhere else. I just stopped uploading material here myself after getting grief from one or two sources. But then I got grief for just posting on here, even without pictures  And yet the people moaning could only have known I post on here if they were here themselves :p

Do you know where there are more photos of this woman? is beautiful. Have you participated in the race in previous years? do you follow his instagram?

Kind regards
