Tumblr is a good example of the new censorship: it used to be that only the 'elite' had access to the media and to have their thoughts heard. Bands had to have major labels backing them, etc. etc. But with the internet everyone has a voice, but that's the problem, how to have it heard about the billion other voices vying for readers?

Women discovered that by flashing their tits a few times they could pick up hundreds of followers in a heart beat. Some did it for fun, others did it to have the spotlight swing their way. Any many wanted to be heard for other things, and started to resent the attention only for their nudity (I started another thread for those who changed their minds).

Others still discovered it was a way of crowdsourcing. They could post an Amazon wish list or announce that they need money for their sick dog or whatever, in the hopes that of the thousand readers they have, maybe one or two is rich and wouldn't mind parting with some cash.

I'm sure it works often enough, but it does start to become tiresome. Many women also let the inevitable bullshit they have to deal with (guys aggressively verbally harassing them, insults like sl*t and fatty, for example) turn into a chip on their shoulder. At this point many of their posts become bitter and readers get turned off. I suspect there's a real blogger/tumblr withdrawl that people go thru when they stop getting the attention they once had.
