Default programs to reduce large files

I've got a whole whack of vids that I'd like to start posting, but most are over the 10 meg limit. Does anyone know a good, FREE program to edit movie files (mpeg, avi, wmv, asf are the main vids I have) to get them under 10 meg (ie. just keep the good bits).

I have a bunch of programs to split large files into a bunch of smaller ones, but when I'm looking for vids I hate having to join them before I watch them so I'd rather not do that as a poster.

I'm sure others on here would appreciate any input on this too.

stony,

Are you using Windows XP? If so you can try using Windows Movie Maker.

Sigh, XP -- perhaps when I get a new computer, but right now I'm running Me on my desktop and 98 on my notebook.
