Suggestion - 3GP Clips

Just a suggestion but there is a *lot* of amateur 3gp posts out there, people take pretty hot amature shots and tend to swap from phone to phone. As yet I haven't found a site that specialises in 3GP posts of this nature.

It's often the case that people convert them to avi (often causing sync problems) and I think the converted files don't attract mobile fans as they then have to reconvert again to transfer them to the phone.

How about trialling a 3gp area ? Those users without phones can still play them using the free nokia player

There really is a lot of material out there but only a few make it to torrents and with a few exceptions only the desi and pinay clips make it to websites/blogs, a respository for 3gp clips might attract mobile uploaders. What do you think ?

I 100% support that also, I love those clips, and they play fine with quicktime. I think maybe we should make a section for it.

The mods and I will talk this over. Perhaps, we will enable that extension so 3gp videos can be uploaded without being .ZIPPED first.

I think it would be a good idea to enable the extension. I don't think it needs its own area though. Just having them as another filetype like avi and mpg would be good.

The support question remains. It will depend on how difficult it would be to offer media player support for different browsers and operating sytems. That is why we have chosen not to enable other extensions in the past.

I could be wrong but this file plays good on quick time, which is available for mac and windows

In the codec war the 3gp format is weak, I don't live in Europe but the fact that I have to use a different specfic player to watch them sucks. The fact that with that odd ball media player I have to use can't jump through most of the videos for whatever reason (be it the index or whatever the problem) sucks. In addition, from my experience the files do not play in Real and I rarely incounter a video that I can't convert into a more friendly format; 3gp files are just a pain in the arse to convert and the vids are about as low quality, in terms of picture quality, as video can come. This is not to say that I hate them, because the content usually rocks, but, in my opinion, they are pain to deal with just like .rm files and I like knowing that the file is either or because I have to unzip it.
