Don't know where you're based but here in the UK escorting is legal, as is the sale of sex provided it's not done in a brothel. Several of my friends are escorts / independent sex workers, and there is no risk in using one, although, like any commercial transaction that starts over the internet, there is a risk of fraud which means you need to check out reviews and the like. I've been to a few parlours in the UK and never understood how they weren't considered brothels under their law! But I was grateful for the loophole!

I think they're tolerated because the alternatives (street prostitution for the bottom end of the market) is worse. Also, quite a few of the parlour girls seem to like the fact they don't have to do any work finding customers, whereas independents have to manage a business and their reputation.
