Can we post original then cropped photos
I downloaded a photo, sorry don't remember from whom, I think it was a zip file from girls exposing girls. I really try not to repost but I was playing around with the photo and did some cropping. Can we repost a photo and then our cropped versions to see if anyone likes the cropped version better?
Just a thought but then I thought if everyone started to do it there would be reposts galore with hundreds of cropped versions taking up server space. I thought it might work if this can be done by having the repost original and cropped versions thread deleted automatically after 14 days? I just thought it would be a fun way for people to be creative, but it would only work if the thread was automatically deleted to conserve server space. Anyway no one might be interested anyway. One crop I just cropped out the sofa and light switch to remove useless details, the others I tried to be more creative and cropped to make the photo a little more interesting.

Just a personal opinion. I post only my stuff. I'd get really pissed if someone cropped and reposted my pics. I understand that my pics may possibly be reposted elsewhere, even consider that as a compliment. But to crop them and repost is an insult and deceit. Besides, I think everyone that has a computer knows how to crop. If you've got free time, I'd suggest you grab a camera and go out and shoot some pics before cold weather sets in. That way you can compose the pics just the way you want them and really show off some skills. Just my 2¢.

Overeaction?
First
I said post the original. This was so that people who viewed the post would know that it came from an original source. I cited as best I could my source and posted the original. No deceit. Second your reply was not just your 2 cents. It was amazingly hostile, or at least a serious overreaction. No deceit is intended no deceit is possible by posting the original with a cite as I did. If you are insulted by someone possibly doing something interesting with your original work, that to me seems small minded. I have learned a lot by people showing me how I can improve my photos and stories. There was no intent to steal anyone's work. I have seen stories I wrote reposted by others with the reposter claiming authorship. That is wrong. To claim others work as your own is wrong. I can understand being pissed off if someone is trying to steal your work, however if someone used my story as a departure point or even posted my story with credit and then posted a version they felt was more interesting I would be interested in reading it. Someone else might see how I could have done a better job. I could then agree that those aspects would have improved it or rejected those aspects as ruining my story. I would be interested in reading it though, if I was credited. That's how I learn. Third You don't know anything about my level of ability or talent. "If you've got free time, I'd suggest you grab a camera and go out and shoot some pics before cold weather sets in. That way you can compose the pics just the way you want them and really show off some skills." Was that really called for? It had nothing to do with the question in my post. Personally I think it was an attempt to say I have no talent. Fourth just because you can crop doesn't mean you can crop well, either artistically or to make a photo a little more interesting. Finally it was just idea of how people can have some fun and add to the board. People on this board might be disabled, or shy, or don't have a good camera, or a myriad of other reasons and this could be a way to include them. Still why so hostile?

I figure that the photographers who don't care enough about their pics to crop them well probably also don't care enough about them to complain about their spread around the net. Really old pics taken by anonymous photog are fair game. Some of these are classics and it really wouldn't be a waste of someone's time to recrop them and post them here. I don't think you'd need to delete the thread after a while as I doubt there is enough interest here to use up server space. Anyway, I started a thread once for artistic public nudity pics and the idea was in part for people to post improvements on classic pics. So yeah, I'm interested in this..
FLickr pics on the other hand can usually be traced back to the original photographer, and I would be hesitant to mess with them here. Its that way with a lot of other material traceable to more recent photo albums. Most people probably don't care too much, but enough do to potentially make it an issue. As for me, I take pride in my pics and complained to Coccozella when they recropped them. Some of my pics are floating around the net in half a dozen versions and if I had my way, that would not be the case. Its called "quality control" So yeah, get permission if you can. If you can't and the original photographer can be traced back to easily, you could make someone upset, especially if the pic is already nicely cropped. We have copyright issues as it is in many cases with Flickr pics even if they are not recropped, so that is why caution is advised... But older material or really popular pics that have been reposted ad nauseum could go up, original and recropped. If it were my thread, I'd try to make it instructional i.e. I would say how and why I recropped it the way that I did. We have a lot of posters of original material now at OCC, and something like this where we could all learn more about the "art of the crop" might be well received. Cropping can be taught, and most amateurs (our primary source material at OCC) are really not very good at it. But I mean, if you are going to spend thousands of dollars taking and posting pics, do you really want to go through life being a "crappy cropper"? A serious thread devoted to all aspects of improving pic quality, with examples (before and after), etc would be fun and educational.. Yes, the idea behind a cropping thread is to improve pics, especially ones that already have a lot going for them. Sometimes a guy will shoot a great, one of a kind pic (like the one below) Often you just get lucky. Action shots are always the luck of the draw. But when that happens, it is really a shame to not have it cropped well. The pic below wasn't bad, but I though it needed to come in on the left especially. You always want to crop so that the eye cascades or funnels in towards the center of interest or the focal point, in this case the girl's face and torso. I cropped the tree on the left to the width of the girls body (her waist vs the tree in the top left corner). That made that tree repeat her shape from the waist down. I also cropped a little off of the top, right and bottom, but not too much.
