As far as codecs go, you're probably going to want to download the K-Lite Codec Pack to get all of the ones you really need:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm. Once you have that downloaded, you should be able to play most videos with no problem. For older versions of Windows Media Player, try here:

You can also try VLC Media Player, which a lot of people recommend, though I personally dislike the program:
