Tutorial: How to make vidcaps

Since Windows Movie Maker comes bundled with windows XP, I thought I would explain how to use it for making vidcaps.

Start Windows Movie Maker and choose "Import video" from the menu on the left. Click on the thumbnail for the video you imported. Now you can play it using the controls on the right. Pause playback on the frame you want to capture then click the icon that looks like a camera that says "Take picture" when the mouse is over it. That opens the standard Windows "Save As" dialog box where you can name the vidcap and choose where to save it on your hard drive.

That's how I do it. Maybe some other users will chime in if they use other free software.

You might also want to check to see if a newer version of Windows Movie Maker is available by using Windows Update.

Thanks

To make caps I normally use Ifranview. Easy and free. It opens most all movie and graphic files, and to make a cap just right click, select copy on when the view you want is shown, and then go past in paint or something but remember to save as .jpg and not .bmp so that way it shows as a picture and not a file here at OCC.

Wayyyy easier then that

Get media player classic form http://www.divx-digest.com/software/...r_classic.html
Play your vid and when you want to take a screenshot press the F5 key (saved to your C:\ drive)

rinse and repeat as needed....

BTW it will also play alot of partially downloaded files (while it's still downloading) so those of us on dialup can see what we are getting before we waste time on it.

I just tried this and I can't get it to work. I do know that regular Windows Media Player will allow you to save a frame of an mpg file...just press CTRL-I while it is playing. It may work on other formats too, but I couldn't get it to work on wmv's.

You can also use Video2Photo which you can find for free via Google. I used it for the wmv file..it is kind of a hassle though becuase it makes you go through a bunch of steps just to get the cap, but it isn't that bad.

I will check out Ifranview that someone else recommended.

Frame Grabs from AVIs

I use the free VirtualDub editing program. When you press <ctrl>1, it copies the current frame to the clipboard. Then just paste it to IrfanView or whatever and save in your favorite format

MPlayer

To convert (part of) a movie to a series of JPEG files, I use MPlayer (download from http://www.mplayerhq.hu or http://mplayerosx.sf.net). I use the following command to save 10 frames starting at 555 seconds from the beginning of t.avi:

mplayer -nosound -vo jpeg -frames 9 -ss 555 t.avi
# creates 00000001.jpg to 00000004.jpg

This is what I do

Hi

To extract images

From Real Player, do the following

Go to Tools->Preferences

Then in the left side pane Choose "Hardware"

In the right pane, there is one slider at the downmost which is called "Video Card Compatibility", here get that slider to its most left.

Click OK

From Windows Media Player, do the following

Go to Tools->Options Go to Performance Tab

There is one slider under Video acceleration , get this slider to its most left.

now open the video file, pause at the scene you want to have image of (e.g. nipple in mouth, boob in hand, etc ) then click the following combination of keys.

ALT+PrintScreen

The image is on your clipboard and you can paste it in any image viewer

I use IrfanView

Hope this helps !!

For Mac OSX Users

There is a free program called SnapNDrag that will take a snapshot of anything that appears on your screen and turn it into a .jpg file. I'm sure you can find out where to download it by Googling, or else try Versiontracker.

It does not matter what format the video is in so long as you are able open it and pause it at whatever place(s) you want to make the vidcap. Then just frame the portion you want to save, take the snapshot. A thumbnail will appear and you can drag it to your desktop or wherever else you want it. Couldn't be simpler.

Free Program

I'd recommend a nice little Windows program called Image Grabber. It's free and IMHO does a very nice job of creating single screen caps or a contact sheet from a vid. There are three versions. The latest is for Microsoft .NET only. If you don't have that, I'd recommend trying Image Grabber II (the one I've used). If all fails you can use their earliest version.
