UK porn ban (more or less)

https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/13/1...onomy-act-2017

Guys, are you going to be buying Her Majesty's government's API so we wankers in the UK can buy a porn license for OCC, or will you just not bother and face a nationwide ISP-level block (and prosecution and £250,000 fine), much to our displeasure?

Pffftt...

🤔 Wonder if all the paedophiles & rapists in Westminster will be required to buy a pass?
Or will they get a "free ride" as usual? lol

I feel bad you Brits. The USA has a ton of problems but internet censorship isn't one of them (yet...).

I am a UK porn website owner and was speaking with the guys from Ageid. This was before it was pushed back. Because my site was co.uk , i was getting the verification system for free but do not know if that is still the case. Im all for keeping kids away from my site but i get a feeling its the government just wanting to control another section of the internet. I think people would be embarrassed taking this age thing to a shop counter. I know you can also use credit card etc online but that is handing them your real info. I can honestly see it getting pushed back again till 2019

UNLIKELY???

The chance of this becoming law in the near future is very slim as no one at government level as yet defined what porn is.

With the current UK govt reputation on delivering things I wouldn't worry...

What are they going to do about sites like Twitter and Tumblr?. Literally millions of porn videos & pics on them. A quick hop on a vpn and your around it. Hell opera browser has a vpn built in. They banned piratebay and i can get on that in around a minute

I'm a little puzzled (which is nothing new for me). Will it affect OCC users if we already log in here? Or just new members after this proposed new law? Or is this going to affect people who just want to view the site?

From what I understand, web site owners/managers will have the responsibility to enforce checks to verify the location of each user, and if a user is in the UK, then the site will have to require government-approved age verification. This holds for registered and not registered users alike.

Really, I can see many problems with this. One is that it puts the burden of control on the web sites, and it's not a small one. As someone else already said, the first thing people will attempt will be to use VPNs. Will web sites be required to block users using VPNs? How much more technical burden are they going to demand? Who will maintain a database of porn license numbers? What if some numbers get leaked? How will the number revoke system work? Porn license will be anonymous; so, will license holders have to buy a new one if the central database gets hacked, even though it is no fault of theirs? Or maybe, are they going to implement a distributed database (blockchain)? What is going to happen with search engines? Will they be OK but require age verification if one disables safe search? If so, how will they distinguish active users from web spiders? And especially, how are they going to enforce the ridiculous fines in the case of web sites registered outside the UK, with servers located outside the UK? Will owners of small, non-UK, non-compliant web sites, and who maybe don't even know about this, be arrested if they come visit London on a holiday?

I think it's ridiculous, but the people in the government sure seem to be going ahead with their plans.

I read this post 4 years after you wrote it, and it seems that’s s ton of censorship out there these days. Maybe not so much on porn (yet), but on so many more important levels…

Crazy how fast things change.
