Options for capping vids
3 Attachment(s)
For those of you who do not like bsplayer to cap your vids (I personally don't like it and removed it from my system about 2 minutes after installing it), you might want to consider using infranview: http://www.irfanview.com/
For those who don't know, infranview is a free picture player and is my personal favourite, but it also plays video clips. To cap using infranview, first set the preferences: 1) open infranview 2) hit 'c'to bring up the 'capture setup screen' and set the settings as in pic #1 below. 3) hit start button on 'capture setup screen' 4) play vid in infranview 4) when you get to the part you want to cap, hit 'ctrl' + f11 on your key board at the same time and the captured pic will be saved to your desktop as in pic #2 below. 5) you'll see that there is a little toolbar at the top of the pic: to remove it go to the top left corner of the pictue, left click and drag down the right bottom of the pic - a square will now be over the pic section. 6) go to 'edit' in the top tool bar, hit 'crop' 7) go to file and hit 'save'. There is your cap (see picture 3) It takes less than a minute to go from playing the vid to saving the cropped pic. |
cool
Great tutorial Stony, and i recognise that video you used hehehe.
This forum sure is friendly and helpful to member's. regards CP. |
MovieSnapshot
Thanks CP. I also notice that in this thread:
you recommended MovieSnapshot as a possible capping program: http://www.cd2html.de/download.en.html Maybe other people with suggestions on free ways to cap vids (and other than Windows MovieMaker which has been talked about to death) can post their suggestions and links here. That way, people who don't cap their vids can be directed to this thread and your bsplayer one. :) |

To the board in general: what (free) software are you using to cap vids?
The only software I've been able to use is Movie Maker. For most vids, it's an ordeal just to get one shot (10+ minutes), so I either don't post (so as not to be rude) or post without caps (so as to share). |
what i use
i preffer virtualdub.

Since it isn't mentioned yet I thought it was worth mentioning that on mac capping can be done with some function using built in system
Command(aka apple key)-shift 3 Whole Screen Command-shift-4 Screen selection (locks screen into still motion so you can take time.) Command-shift-4 then hit spacebar instead of using selection tool. The screen reanimates and a tool is active that will automatically capture any open window and all of it's contents by point and click.. Further features will require Snapz Pro from Ambrosia SW, which is unlimited when it comes to capture. As it can do stills movies etc in any format in any place...Including audio capture from mic or system audio output grabbing...I've used this tool many times to convert proprietary formats to standards by capturing from a playing source and saving output file in desired conversion format. In fact this even works with DRM media like itunes videos but that's another story. ;) As for Windows, if there is no desire to use any third party software. Pressing the "print screen" key will suffice for a screen cap. Then open paint and choose to paste it. There is screen you captured. Then crop what you wanted from it and save outgoing to format you wish. |
thanx
Thanx for the info for mac users.
I am clueless with mac's, but i do know that some members here use them, so am sure they will be glad of this info, regards CP. |

Media Player Classic
1 Attachment(s)
I'd strongly recommend Media player classic. I just figured out that it has a function that captures whole vids automatically (see attached pic).
You just have to click: File --> Save preview pics (I guess it's called so, i use the german version) --> save the pic You can change the # of columns and lines and the pic size (will affect the number of pics in the preview). Using this method will give an better overview about the movie |

Iget an error saying that it wont do it. Is it 'cos I'm trying to cap an Xvid encoded video? |
Imagegrabber (I believe that the current release is Imagegrabber II and it is freeware) also works for providing 'contact sheets' similar to the ones that you get with Media Player Classic.
It can be found here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ImageGrabber |
very nice
very nice post..
cheers |
I have been using GOMPLAYER - freeware - it works ok for cap stills from vid

Screen Captures
Personally I don't like to download a file if it doesn't have screen caps so here are some tips:
Screen Captures ===================== Windows Media Player ===================== You can do a screen capture from Windows Media Player. Open Windows Media Player and go to... Tools / Options / Performance tab / Advanced button... Uncheck the box...'Use Overlays' / OK / Apply / Yes / OK... Now...play the video and pause it on the screen you wish to capture...to do your screen capture press the "print screen" button on your keyboard, this copies the capture to your clipboard - paste the capture in Paint or Photoshop (whatever you like) and crop/save it. ===================== Media Player Classic ===================== For screen captures in Media Player Classic... try the following steps... Open Media Player Classic and go to...View / Options / Playback / Output...in the right pane... tick...System Default / Apply / OK Now play your movie clip and type... Alt+I to do the capture. You do not have to pause but it makes it easier to get the frame you want. ===================== VLC Media Player ===================== To setup for your screen captures...open VLC and go to...Tools / Preferences / Video button / Video Snapshots section. In the directory field...Browse to and select a folder to save your captures in. (for example...you could create a new folder on your desktop and select it) At...Prefix...check the box...Sequential numbering. At...Format...choose JPEG or PNG. Finally.....left click the 'Save' button. Now...Play the video and pause by pressing your Spacebar when you see a screen you wish to capture. To capture the screen...type... Shift+S Press spacebar to advance to the next photo... |
i tried using the "print screen" option in windows media player and pasting it into ms paint, but that is a pain in the butt because you have to crop the photos. it would take forever to make a good number of caps for each vid.
i also tried using the screen shot feature in vlc player. but i hate that as well. it's difficult to get it to pause exactly where you want (the old windows movie maker was great at that). anyone have any other recommendations? i'd rather not load up my computer with even more software, but if i have to i guess i will. i've noticed some software mentioned earlier in this thread, but that was 4 years old and i assume there's new/better stuff now. thanks. |
